Webinar on Swimway Bangladesh

BCFRC, world fish migration day 2020 Bangladesh successfully celebrated on 30 October, 2020 as virtual talk about Swimway Bangladesh in ZOOM due to COVID 19 pandemic. Swimway Bangladesh is a route of migratory fish. Some swim thousands of miles, migrating from their place of birth to locations where they can find food or suitable habitats to reproduce. They depend on free flowing rivers, lake and water fall. This event has been concern on individual topic that relate with fish and rivers of Bangladesh. All are enjoy virtual talk that have been held as an online video conference discussion. Buriganga River has been focused in this event due to water pollution and migratory route. Once upon a time, in 1975 migratory fish was available in the Buriganga river and also river dolphin is present in the Buriganga and Turag river.

 

 

   

   

Organizer and director Md Muzammel Hossain  delivered welcome speech in the event. Guest speaker Herman Wanningen of World Fish Migration Foundation, Groningen, Netherlands was enjoy the virtual event and presented activities of dam remove. Nasima Kabir was presented on "Identification of fish using DNA barcoding method". Bijoy Kumar Ghosh presented on "Fish Migration and Fish Pass in Bangladesh". Moumita saha bristy presented on "Fish dispersal in remote, isolated water bodies". Md. Mehadi Hasan Sohag reported on scope of Biotechnology in sustainable fish production: Bangladesh perspective. Special speaker Dr Mohammad Abdul Baki presented on current status of migratory fish and river of Bangladesh.

Jagannath University Day 2020

Jagannath University (JnU) authorities are celebrating its 15th founding anniversary on 20 October, 2020  and started the journey 16 years with new 16 floor tallest building for the accommodation of female students that name is "Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall, JnU".

To mark the “Jagannath University Day 2020”, the university chalked out elaborate programmes which include hoisting national and university flags, colorful procession, discussion programme followed by cultural performances.

JnU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr Mijanur Rahman inaugurated the day-long programmes by hoisting the national flag of Bangladesh. 

 

In 1868, Jagannath Roy Chowdhury founded a school, which was upgraded to a college in 1884. The college was turned into a public university on October 20, 2005. It has around 17,000 students.

 

Crabs from Marine Water of Bangladesh

In the study a total of 18 crab species were identified, belonging to 10 families (Calappidae, Epialtidae, Gecarcinidae, Grapsidae, Matutidae, Ocypodidae, Panopeidae, Sesarmidae, Varunidae, and Xanthidae) order Decapoda under subphylum crustacean with relevant distinguish morphological and meristic character and geographical position. We investigated crab species of Bangladesh from December 2013 to October 2014. All species samples were collected by hand picking on a baseline survey in Saint Martin’s Island (the only coral island of Bangladesh) and adjacent marine water body of Bay of Bengal, Satkhira area (brackish and freshwater) and mangrove forest area (Sundarban). Among 18 species, 10 crab species from Family Epialtidae (1 species), Gecarcinidae (2 species), Ocypodidae (1 species), Panopeidae (1 species), Sesarmidae (1 species) and Xanthidae (4 species) were newly occurred in the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh. Cardisoma armatum and Zosymus aeneus species were larger than other enlisted species.

Inland Fisheries

Freshwater fish provide food, livelihoods, and ecosystem services to millions of people, especially in low-income countries, yet their value is generally not adequately considered in water use, energy, and development decisions. Freshwater fisheries around the world may appear to be very different, but their value to local communities and the threats to their sustainability are often similar.

The challenges to inland fisheries are also critical to the 60 million people who rely on freshwater fish for livelihoods – over half of whom are women. Fish is also an essential source of protein and other nutrients that cannot easily be replaced with other food sources.

Inland fisheries around the world – and the people who depend on them for food, livelihoods, and well-being – need international cross-sectoral action to improve the sustainability of freshwater aquatic resources, according to recommendations in 2015 at the Committee on Fisheries (COFI) meeting at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome.

PhD position in Salmon Ecology and Evolution

A Doctoral student position, is available at the University of Helsinki, Finland. The position is a part of a 5-year Academy of Finland funded project, and aims to understand the processes shaping Atlantic salmon demography in the wild.

Atlantic salmon is a great organism to study gene-phenotype-fitness relationship in the wild. The presence of substantial material from past research and monitoring efforts, and a simple 2-locus system broadly controls important life history variation (see refs below) allow for an integrated framework to track adaptive genetic variation in Atlantic salmon in the wild.

Using multigenerational, multi population datasets composed of genetic and phenotypic information, the PhD student will employ age structured population models and whole food web approaches to understand the evolutionary processes and ecological constrains shaping Atlantic salmon life history variation and demography.

অধ্যাপক ড. মীজানুর রহমান ভিসি স্যার একজন হবে । যিনি জগন্নাথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে সাংস্কৃতিক চর্চা বেগবান করার জন্য সংগীত, নাট্যকলা, চিত্রকলার মতো সাবজেক্ট খুলেছেন। তিনি গবেষণার সুযোগ তৈরী করার জন্য মাইক্রোবায়োলজি সংশ্লিষ্ট সাবজেক্ট খুলেছেন। শিক্ষার্থীদের শিক্ষার মান বাড়ানোর জন্য নবীন শিক্ষকদের উচ্চশিক্ষায় উৎসাহিত করছেন। দেশসেরা মেধাবীদের শিক্ষক হিসেবে নিয়োগ দিচ্ছেন। ইতোমধ্যে উল্ল্যেখযোগ্য সংখ্যক জবিয়ানকে শিক্ষক হিসেবে যোগদান করিয়েছেন। পহেলা বৈশাখকে কেন্দ্র করে পুরনো ঢাকায় একটি সাংস্কৃতিক বলয় তৈরী করেছেন। ধর্মীয় নিরপেক্ষতায় ক্যাম্পাসে বিভিন্ন পুজা এবং স্টার সানডে, বড়দিন সহ নানা ধর্মীয় অনুষ্ঠানের আয়োজন করেছেন।

মেধাবী শিক্ষার্থীদের পড়ার জন্য রাত্রি কালীন লাইব্রেরী খুলেছেন। ছোট ক্যাম্পাসের সীমাবদ্ধতার মধ্যে ইনডোর গেমস এবং ধুপখোলায় সারাবছর খেলাধুলা চালু রেখেছেন। সাংস্কৃতিক কেন্দ্র, আবৃত্তি সংসদ, চলচ্চিত্র সংসদ সহ সতেরটি সংগঠনকে আর্থিক সহয়তা করে প্রতিভা বিকাশের সুযোগ রেখেছেন। ছাত্রীদের আবাসনের জন্য একটি ছাত্রীহল নির্মাণ করেছেন। ছাত্রদের দখলকৃত দুটি হল উদ্ধার করছেন। নতুন হল নির্মাণের জন্য বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের নিজস্ব অর্থায়নে কেরানীগঞ্জে জায়গা কিনেছেন। সরকারের সাথে আলোচনা করে নতুন ক্যাম্পাসের ব্যবস্থা করেছেন। ভর্তি জালিয়াতি বন্ধ করার জন্য নিজস্ব ব্যবস্থাপনায় ভর্তি পরীক্ষা নিয়েছেন। মেধাবী শিক্ষার্থীরা যাতে ভর্তি হতে পারে তার জন্য লিখিত ভর্তি পরীক্ষা নিয়েছেন। গরীব অসহায় ছাত্রদের ফ্রী ভর্তির ব্যবস্থা করেছেন। বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়কে আন্তর্জাতিকভাবে পরিচিত লাভ করানোর জন্য আন্তর্জাতিক সংগীত উৎসব সহ বিভিন্ন আন্তর্জাতিক সেমিনারের আয়োজন করা হয়েছে। শত সীমাবদ্ধতা থাকা সত্বেও প্রথম সমাবর্তন নিজস্ব জায়গায় করেছেন। করোনা ভাইরাস মোকাবিলা করার জন্য ন্যাশনাল মেডিকেল কলেজের সাথে চুক্তি স্বাক্ষর করে ছাত্র শিক্ষক কর্মকর্তা কর্মচারীদের চিকিৎসা সেবা নিশ্চিত করেছেন। বিগত ছয় সাত বছরে কর্মকর্তা নিয়োগের প্রায় শতভাগই ( টেকনিক্যাল বাদে) জগন্নাথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষার্থী। বাসা থেকে যাতায়াতের জন্য শিক্ষার্থীদের জন্য বিভিন্ন জেলায় বাসের ব্যবস্থা করেছেন। তিনি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের প্রতিটি ছোট বড় অনুষ্ঠানে উপস্থিত থেকে শিক্ষার্থীদের উৎসাহ প্রদান করেন। যে কোন বিষয় নিয়ে যে কোন শিক্ষার্থী যে কোন সময় তাঁর সাথে সাক্ষাৎ করতে পারেন।

অনেকে লিখেছেন তিনি যুবলীগের নেতা ছিলেন। যুবলীগ কি বাংলাদেশের নিষিদ্ধ সংগঠন? অনেকে লিখেছেন তিনি টকশো করেন। কিন্তু একবার ভেবেছেন তিনি টকশোতে উপস্থিত হলে তাঁর সাথে জগন্নাথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের নামটাও উচ্চারিত হচ্ছে। তিনি নিয়মিত কলাম লেখেন। কলামের শেষে তাঁর নামের পাশে জগন্নাথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের নামটা লেখা থাকে।

পদ্মাসেতু নির্মাণে এক কোটি টাকা প্রদান কিম্বা রোহিঙ্গাদের সহয়তা প্রদানে ভিসি ড. মীজানুর রহমানের নয় জগন্নাথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের নাম উচ্চারিত হয়েছিল।

যিনি করোনাভাইরাস মোকাবেলা করার জন্য বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় বন্ধ থাকায় দৈনিক হাজিরা ভিত্তিক কর্মচারীদের বেতন ভাতাদি পরিশোধ করছেন। গরীব অসহায় শিক্ষার্থীদের আর্থিক সহযোগিতা করেছেন করোনাকালে। ফেসবুকের কল্যানে আমরা জেনেছি আজিমপুর সহ ঢাকায় আটকে পড়া শিক্ষার্থীদের পাশে থেকে বাড়ীওয়ালাদের সাথে কথা বলে গ্রামে যাওয়ার ব্যবস্থা করেছে জগন্নাথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় প্রশাসন। প্রতিবন্ধী শিক্ষার্থী হাফিজকে চাকরির ব্যবস্থা করেছেন। যিনি শিক্ষার্থীদের পক্ষে একাডেমিক কাউন্সিলে ভূমিকা রাখেন। যিনি শিক্ষার্থীদের উচ্চ শিক্ষায় সুযোগ তৈরির জন্য বিদেশি কয়েকটি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের সাথে চুক্তি স্বাক্ষর করেছেন। যিনি জগন্নাথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়কে আধুনিক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে রুপান্তরিত করার জন্য কাজ করে যাচ্ছেন। যিনি ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষার্থী এবং শিক্ষক হওয়া সত্বেও জগন্নাথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষার্থীদের বিভিন্ন রকমের অর্জনে আনন্দিত হন তাকে বহিরাগত বলতে আমার কাছে খারাপ লাগে। জগন্নাথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষার্থীদের মধ্যে এখনো পর্যন্ত সহকারী অধ্যাপক হয়েছেন সর্বোচ্চ ( আমার জানামতে)। আমাদের মনে রাখতে হবে এরপর যিনি ভিসি হিসেবে নিয়োগ পাবেন তিনিও অন্য কোন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষার্থী এবং শিক্ষক। অধ্যাপক ড. মীজানুর রহমান একজন মানবিক ভিসি হিসেবে সারাদেশে পরিচিত কিন্তু আজ কার/ কাদের স্বার্থের কারনে কিম্বা স্বার্থেরহানীর কারনে মিসকিনের ভিসি হলেন! ষড়যন্ত্র !!!!!

Bangladeshi scientist discover new frog species (Raorchestes rezakhani)

Hassan Al Razi discover new frog species in Bangladesh. scientific name: Raorchestes rezakhani, English Name: Bush frog. The 16S rRNA gene distinguished this species from 48 known species of this genus. Bayesian Inference and Maximum Likelihood analyses indicated  that  the  new  species  was  most  similar  to  R.  tuberohumerus,  a  species  found  in  the  Western  Ghats, and to R. gryllus, a species found in Vietnam. Bioacoustics indicated that their calls were similar in pattern to most Raorchestes species, although number of pulses, duration of pulses, pulse intervals and amplitude differentiated it from a few other species. It is suggested that northeastern India, Bangladesh, northern Myanmar, and southern China represent important, relatively unexplored areas that could yield additional  species  of  Raorchestes.  Since  many  remaining  habitat  patches  in  Bangladesh  are  under  severe  threat from deforestation, efforts should be made to protect these last patches from further degradation.

Bangladesh falls within the Indo-Malayan realm, with forests classified as tropical moist, tropical evergreen and several other less-extensive forest types . Broad similarities exist between forest patches in north-eastern and southeastern Bangladesh and the surrounding Indian States of Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram and Nagaland, and adjoining northern Myanmar and southern China.

COVID-19 is a new disease that has not been previously identified in humans. Rarely, animal coronaviruses can infect people, and more rarely, these can then spread from person to person through close contact. There have been 2 other specific coronaviruses that have spread from animals to humans and which have caused severe illness in humans. These symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure (based on the incubation period of MERS-CoV viruses).
